A big part of the three-way carrier competition is the active attempts by each one to get you to switch to them. Promotions for switching from your existing carrier are the most common thing in the world, and they get more and more generous by the day.

Meanwhile, promotions rewarding you for staying instead of leaving are rather rare these days. We’re not sure why that’s the case, as that’s probably the perfect way to tackle the problem from the root, but here we are. Verizon has launched a bit of a hidden promotion that might just get you to stop thinking about other carriers for a while.

Verizon is secretly offering its users a unique way to save money on their monthly bills. How exactly, you might ask? As a Slickdeals user initially found, the carrier is now luring its own subscribers with a $10 discount on your monthly bill for a year if they detect you might be about to switch.

What’s particularly interesting is that you don’t need to have any actual intention of switching carriers to enjoy this benefit — so don’t go calling Verizon’s customer service to threaten a move to T-Mobile.

To access the discount, Verizon subscribers simply need to open their My Verizon app, navigate to “Edit Profile and Settings,” and disable the “Number Lock” feature in the “Security” section of their account settings. Then, go and generate a “Number Transfer Pin”. Verizon will send you an email offering the $10 monthly discount, trying to persuade you to stay.

This series of actions is apparently understood by Verizon that you might be considering a number transfer to another carrier, thus automatically triggering a “please don’t go!” text/email.

The best part is that this discount applies to each line you disable Number Lock on, potentially leading to savings of up to $120 per year per line. However, you should re-enable Number Lock after enjoying the promotion for security purposes.

As with all odd discounts like this, your mileage may vary. It’s possible this trick will only work for certain accounts, or could also stop working at any time.

If you’re a Verizon subscriber, you should definitely act quickly to take advantage of this opportunity, as the promotion could end at any time.
