Have you ever wanted to go to outer space? T-Mobile may not be able to afford to send every customer physically up in a rocket, but thanks to a YouTuber, they can at least let you take a selfie there!
Mark Rober, a YouTuber popular for engineering, porch pirate punishing, and squirrel-obstacle-course creating, is sending a self-made selfie satellite to orbit.
Mark spent the last 3 years with his team developing the “Sat Gus” satellite, designed to enter orbit and take pictures of a Google Pixel with people’s selfies displayed on it. The images will therefore have the Earth as the backdrop. Pretty neat.
The satellite even has the ability to schedule your selfie pic while your location is visible on the Earth below.
The satellite is being launched by SpaceX in January, and is set to begin taking photos a few months after that.
For most people, to get your selfie, you’ll need to subscribe to CrunchLabs, an excellent engineering-focused subscription kit that offers cool builds for both kids and teens/adults. Subscribers are getting a free code available now in their online dashboard.
Being that SpaceX and T-Mobile are already partnered as it is, it made sense for T-Mobile to sponsor the space selfie effort, and is offering all their customers a code for a free space selfie via the T-Life app as part of T-Mobile Tuesdays.
To redeem, visit the T-Life app this coming Tuesday, December 3rd, and redeem in the app.
The code can then be redeemed on spaceselfie.com. You’ll be able to upload your selfie and receive an email allowing you to track when your selfie will be taken.
If you’re not a T-Mobile customer, Google Pixel is also offering their customers free codes at a later date. Presumably this means anyone who’s purchased a recent Pixel device, but details aren’t available quite yet.
The offer will be available in the T-Life app on Tuesday, December 3rd.
