It seems that things are only going further downhill for Helium Mobile. The low-cost carrier, perhaps best known for its free “Zero Plan,” announced last month that it would be ending that plan for new customers but grandfathering in existing customers.

In a statement to Android Authority, the carrier stated that “The Zero plan is not currently available to new subscribers or those looking to downgrade, as we refine our offerings. Existing Zero plan subscribers are not impacted. We remain focused on delivering affordable, reliable mobile service to our subscribers.”

Well, so much for that.

Now, it’s getting worse

In an email to Zero Plan subscribers, Helium Mobile announced that the plan would be discontinued on June 11, 2026.

The carrier cited that such a plan was “not sustainable long term,” and that any current subscribers to it will be automatically upgraded to the $15/month “Air Plan” if they take no action. For those following along at home, that’s only 21 days away.

No negative feedback please

It seems Helium Mobile is also not taking some of the backlash very well.

In a comment on an r/NoContract subreddit post, user u/superb-scarf-petty posted that the carrier banned him from the official r/HeliumMobile subreddit after the user warned that a class action lawsuit from disgruntled customers might be on the way.

The carrier has also been spotted deleting comments on that post, including the parent comment of u/superb-scarf-petty’s reply.

Of course, there are still alternatives out there depending on what you use your phone for. Commenters on the r/NoContract post suggest carriers like US Mobile, Tello, MobileX, RedPocket, TextNow, or even T-Mobile’s low-tier plans.

If you need more data (or more lines), Verizon’s newest $100 4-Line Plan that we covered a few weeks ago is also enticing.

Final thoughts

Is Helium Mobile heading towards bankruptcy? That’s up in the air, but removing the free plan is certainly not a good sign.

Pair that with the questionable moderator activities on the official subreddit, and the picture only gets murkier. What’s your take on all of this? Is Helium Mobile on a slippery downhill slope or was this unavoidable from the start? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
