It was delayed more times than GTA V on PC, but it’s finally here: Self-service SIM changes are now available in the T-Life app, and it comes with a bonus feature, too.

As many people know, T-Mobile first removed the ability to change your own SIM card back in November of 2022. Since then, customers that wanted to change the SIM card associated with a number on their account have had to contact support to get the change completed.

We then covered, a year later, how the feature was still missing, with T-Mobile officially commenting that they had “no news to share” about it at the time.

Finally, back in April of this year, we reported that T-Mobile was planning to launch the feature on April 24th. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and it was delayed to a yet unknown date. Well, that date appears to be today.

With today’s T-Life app update (now available on iOS and presumably coming soon for Android), self-service SIM changes are slowly rolling out to customers.

What is a SIM Swap?

Many times, when you hear the phrase “SIM Swap”, it’s a bad thing. It’s most commonly used to describe when a bad actor gains access to your phone line by swapping the SIM card associated with it to one that they are in possession of. They can then combine things like breached password databases and your two-factor texts to gain access to your emails and banking information.

That’s probably the main reason T-Mobile removed the feature back in 2022. They’ve added many layers of security since then, and in most situations the only person that can change a SIM on a line is the owner of that line.

To be clear, when we say “change your SIM”, we mean the ability to change the SIM card, either physical or eSIM, associated with a specific line on your account. This is not referring to the ability to remove your physical SIM card from your phone and move it to a different one. That’s always been super easy with T-Mobile, and remains so.

Nowadays, most new phones and tablets support eSIM, and even offer the ability to move that eSIM to a different device when needed. This new feature in T-Life fills in the missing gaps, like when you lose your phone and want to put your number onto a different phone with a different eSIM, or when you simply want to change the physical SIM associated with your line.

How to do a SIM change

T-Mobile seems to have made the process pretty painless, too. Just to be clear, the feature seems to be rolling out in slow waves, and maybe people still see a “Contact Us” message.

In the T-Life app, you simply tap manage, choose a line you want to change, scroll down to “SIM transfer or activation” under “Manage your SIM”, and give it a tap. From there, the app guides you through the process.

Interestingly, the app requests the IMEI of the device you’re moving to. This is probably no big deal for most customers, but it’s typically not necessary for activating a SIM. Usually, only the “ICCID” (a physical SIM card number) or the “EID” (the unique ID for eSIMs) are required.

That being said, T-Mobile has used the IMEI wisely here for most customers.

When you enter the IMEI of your device, the app recognizes if it’s a device that supports eSIM, physical SIMs, or both. It then acts accordingly. For devices that support both, an option appears to choose which you’d like to activate.

Once that’s done, you enter either the EID or ICCID for the SIM and confirm it. A final review page is shown, and you’re done!

We currently have not fully completed a SIM change using this tool, but we assume based on how it works that it’s fully functional.

Business customers finally get access to the T-Life app

Another big change with this latest T-Life update is the ability to manage business accounts. Previously, these customers were unable to use the T-Life app, and were instead required to visit the website to manage their accounts.

This has been a long time coming, with some customers on Reddit saying T-Mobile treats small business plans like an “afterthought”.

Other changes

The new update also brings a small change to the wording of the tabs at the bottom of the app. Previously, the section with all your T-Mobile Tuesday perks were located in a section labeled “VIP Status”, a reference to the “Magenta Status” marketing announcement back in February of 2024.

Now, the tab is renamed to simply “Benefits”, and is “the new home for all your member benefits” according to the changelog on the App Store.

In addition, the T-Life app now supports buying accessories directly, with no need to visit the website to purchase. This is also likely the new route customers will take even in-store when purchasing accessories.

Overall, this new update to the T-Life app is significant. We finally get self-service SIM swaps, business plan customers get to use the app to manage their accounts, and more. Hopefully the T-Life app continues to evolve and improve over time.

To snag the T-Life app, you can visit the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store now. Note that the Play Store app isn’t updated yet, but we expect it to be soon. We’ve also seen that the feature seems to be rolling out in waves and not available to everyone yet, so keep an eye out. Be sure to use it to snag a free BBQ spatula on Tuesday, too!
