Back in April, we broke the news that AT&T would offer a “Turbo” add-on for customers on eligible postpaid plans. This add-on would give the customer a higher network priority compared to those without the add-on.
The company advertised it as sort of a “get fast data” add-on, but in reality most customers in non-congested areas would see no difference.
AT&T really loves to show off in status bars though, and just like their infamous 5Ge branding that was really just LTE Advanced, the company is now adding the “Turbo” branding to customer devices when they have the add-on enabled.
According to posts on Reddit and confirmed independently, AT&T customers with the “Turbo” add-on will now see “AT&T Turbo” as their phone’s carrier name instead of just AT&T. Cool bragging rights, I guess?
Both Android devices (like the Pixel 9) and iPhone devices have been hit by the new badge. The devices receive the carrier name change via a “carrier settings update” sent over the AT&T network, an update that happens in the background.
The “Turbo” feature is available for most postpaid plans and at least one prepaid plan as well. Unless you’re in a dense urban area with tons of congestion, though, it’s probably not worth the $7/mo.
You can find out more information on the “Turbo” add-on over on AT&T’s website.
