T-Mobile finalized their purchase of Sprint back in April of 2020. It’s taken 3 years, but the time has finally come for Sprint’s old SIM cards to stop working. We previously covered the May 1st shutoff date for Sprint SIMs, and today is that day.

If you’re still using a Sprint SIM card in your phone, you probably noticed you no longer have a connection. This is because T-Mobile is retiring the older Sprint SIM cards, and you will have to change to a T-Mobile SIM.

T-Mobile began sending out notices (and free SIM cards) to affected customers pretty much since the merger was finalized. Then in February, March, and April of this year they sent final legal notices to those still using Sprint SIMs.

If you find yourself stuck with a non-working phone on or after May 1st, here’s what will happen.

  1. Your line will stop being billed. This means your line is effectively “paused” for the time being.
  2. Any lease or finance charges on the line will be closed.
  3. Any charges billed before May 1st will still be owed.
  4. Your phone number will be held for 30 days.
  5. After 30 days, your line will be fully cancelled and the phone number will be released to be reused.

Customers that are in this situation will need to contact T-Mobile customer care. New info suggests stores will be able to do a standard sim swap to fix the issue, as seen in the image below.

If you do not contact T-Mobile to fix the problem by the end of May, you will lose your number and your line will be cancelled.
